The NT Legal Aid Commission
The NT Legal Aid Commission is an independent statutory body that provides legal information to the community and assistance for people who cannot afford a private lawyer.
Law Student Program
NT Legal Aid offers student placements or internships for a maximum of 20 days. We encourage applications for placement from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and these will be given priority.
Student placements are available in the following sections and regions of the NT Legal Aid Commission.
Criminal – Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs
Family – Darwin
Community Legal Education (CLE) – Darwin
Domestic Violence Legal Service (DVLS) – Darwin
The NT Legal Aid Commission may accept applications each year at any time, however, there are cut off dates for high demand time frames and other particulars each student must be aware of.
June to July (mid semester break) Applications
- Placement applications close for this period on 30 April each year and will be considered in May of each year
- Receipt of applications will be acknowledged via email and;
- All applicants will be advised of the outcome as soon as practical thereafter.
November to February (end of semester break) Applications
- Placement applications close for this period on 30 September each year and will be considered in October of each year
- Receipt of applications will be acknowledged via email and;
- All applicants will be advised of the outcome as soon as practical thereafter.
Application Requirements
Each student is to provide the following as part of their application for placement with the NT Legal Aid Commission.
- Covering Letter/ Email
- Completed application form (click here)
- Current Resume/CV
- Copies of current academic transcripts and grading records
Applications are to be submitted via email to humanresources@legalaid.nt.gov.au under the subject ‘Student Placement Request’ or ‘Work Experience.’
Personal Injury Insurance
It is a requirement of the NT Legal Aid Commission that each student obtain their own Personal Injury Insurance. Students are required to provide proof of this insurance 2 weeks prior to their commencement date. NT Legal Aid cannot not recommend or suggest any insurer.
Secrecy Acknowledgement
Under section 55 of the Legal Aid Act, it is a requirement that all students read, understand and sign a confidentiality agreement prior to commencing placement with the Commission.
