Community legal education

Legal Aid NT provides education for the community to help people know their rights, prevent or reduce legal problems, get help when needed, and promote justice and law reform. We do education through interactive learning sessions for community groups and service providers, films, print and web publications, public events, and projects. We partner with other legal and community services to share skills and resources, address needs and coordinate our work.

Legal Aid NT has specific education programs for:

  • training service provider staff
  • culturally and linguistically diverse communities
  • young people in schools
  • young people in the youth justice system
  • Darwin urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • remote Top End communities
  • communities in the Barkly.

You can see a list of education programs on this page, and the education team can design or adapt programs to meet the needs of your group. Education Programs and Resources

Blurred Borders

Blurred Borders is a visual resource co-created by Legal Aid WA and Legal Aid NT to assist legal and community service providers working with Aboriginal people in the NT/WA cross-border region. Using visual art, storytelling cards, easy to follow fact sheets and games, the kit explains key legal topics like bail, family violence and child protection in a culturally accessible and respectful way.
We offer practical training for legal and non-legal service providers on how to use the Blurred Borders kits effectively in their work.

Judgement Day

Judgement Day helps students experience how the criminal justice system works through observation and role play. The program includes:

  • role of police and police charges
  • a mock legal advice session with a legal aid lawyer
  • observation of the workings of the local court
  • a practical, fun role play of court proceedings.

Students will see how the court system works, how laws are applied in court, and how individuals can exercise their rights to access justice. Educators from Legal Aid NT facilitate the program and work with teachers to ensure curriculum outcomes are met.

It includes guides, legal information in plain language, activities, handouts, and recommended resources about four areas of law: housing, money, family violence, and child protection.  Please contact cle@legalaid.nt.gov.au for a copy of the Toolkit, or if you require training on how to use this resource.

Legal Health Check

The Legal Health Check is a resource to help community services identify their clients’ legal needs and collaborate with free community lawyers to resolve these problems. We can provide training for non-legal service providers on how to use the resource, identify possible legal issues and refer clients to Legal Aid NT.
