Parole Legal Service

Supporting a Strong Transition to Community

About the Parole Legal Service

The Parole Legal Service supports prisoners with a cognitive impairment and/or mental health condition in their transition from prison to community.

Our lawyer and social support worker assist prisoners with:

  • applying for parole and putting the best case forward for prisoner release
  • helping clients understand the outcome of parole applications and parole order conditions
  • developing Transition to Community Plans, to connect clients with services, programs, community and family support when released on parole
  • requesting amendments to parole conditions
  • legal advocacy regarding breaches of parole conditions

Currently, our services are limited to adult prisoners located at Darwin Correctional Centre.

Why is the Parole Legal Service important?

Prisoners experience significant barriers to being released on parole, including a lack of access to legal advocacy in applying for parole and the availability of services on release. As a result, people are remaining in prison for longer than they need to or are returned to custody for breaching parole conditions soon after their release.

The Parole Legal Service will support people to apply for parole with strong plans and supports in place for their transition back into the community.
