Today is the start of the legal year.
Last year was a difficult one for many of us as we assisted with the Royal Commission and eagerly awaited its findings. We are hopeful that 2018 will see the roll out of a range of justice reforms across the legal landscape, reforms which NT Legal Aid has been pursuing for many years. We are looking forward to these being rolled out in the areas of youth justice, child protection and domestic violence. We are eagerly waiting for the foreshadowed dismantling of the mandatory sentencing regime that has caused so much injustice over the years. In 2018, we will see the formulation of the Aboriginal Justice Agreement and implementation of the recommendations of the Alcohol Review, as well as a new Anti Discrimination Act.
NT Legal Aid is made up of nearly 100 employees across five offices, and each and every one of us has an important role in providing access to justice to the most economically disadvantaged people in the Territory. At times our work is very demanding, and while we are busy we strive to always treat people professionally, with respect and with kindness. NT Legal Aid is a place where everyone’s role is important and appreciated.
As Director, I am very excited by the current calibre of our employees, and the opportunities we have to share with the many stakeholders who we work with throughout the year. I am sure that together we will have a great year.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and rewarding 2018.
